Flying Chillies + Lilly Love Cakes

Arriving in Australia 7 years ago, Lilly Wright is from a small town in Kota Tinggi, Malaysia, and has ethnic ancestry from South Sumatra. She graduated with a Degree in Photography in her early 20s, then made a career move into banking, working in that industry until 2016 when she chose to follow her heart and change her career path. Lilly has never regretted it.

Lilly’s love of art has been with her all her life – as a child, she loved to paint, and she still does to this day, finding it a peaceful and calming practice. It is telling that she loves painting watercolours of food and desserts – in 2018, Lilly founded her small Ballarat-based business Lilly Love Cakes.

Her divine sweet creations are a fusion of French and Malaysian flavours and aesthetics. Completely self-taught in baking and cake-decorating, creative experimentation and persistent practice are the ingredients of her success. Her signature desserts include Gin & Tonic Tart, Tiramisu Tart, and Pandan Basque Burnt Cheesecake. Lilly also continues to hone her culinary and team management skills working at Ballarat cafe A Pot of Courage as kitchen & cafe coordinator, cook, and in-house baker.

In addition, Lilly indulges her passion for the taste, texture, and heat of chilies, and has developed explosions of flavour in the form of a selection of chilli oils under her label Flying Chillies – one spoonful utterly transforms a dish!

Lilly hopes others enjoy eating her creations as much as she loves making them, and suggests them as ideal gifts for others or for yourself.
